4th TPM Japan Study Tour

The 4th Japan TPM Study tour was held from April 4 to April 12, in - you guessed it - Japan. In cooperation with BLOM, event has been attended by well known companies such as Masterfoods, Heineken, Heinz, Cosun, Volkswagen and more. This trip, we gathered 14 participants from the Netherlands and Czechoslovakia. They enjoyed a week of seeing some of what Japan may be most famous for apart from electronics - PRODUCTIVITY. Why come all the way to Japan? As one participants put it, "this study tour really showed us that a zero loss mentality is not a myth, and that it is achievable." It is an absolute necessity to see the continuous improvement activity in the country which is famous for it. The most important point of the trip? To experience the culture that fosters some of the world's most productive manufacturing environments.
This April, we visited four Japanese factories famous for their TPM activities: Sanden, Maruyasu, Toyota and TCM. Each site has their own philosophy and drives which is the inspiration for TPM, whether it is to improve profitability or to improve the working conditions, they strive to excel at anything which is put before them. After the site visits, the group returns to a meeting room and discusses in detail the experience of the visit, such as what surprised them or what they found fascinating. The guides of the factory tours we generally the leaders of TPM at their respective sites. Each site was extremely accommodating and friendly, and answered all questions attendees had.
Maybe the best part of the trip (certainly not the most educational!) was the Japanese style party.  All guests stayed at a traditional Japanese Inn called a ‘Ryokan.’  The Ryokan had a very nice natural hot spring bath called an ‘Onsen.’  After everyone took Onsen, we all proceeded to wear traditional Japanese robes and to have a five-star Japanese style dinner, complete with Karaoke and dancing.

Overall, everyone had a great trip and learned a great deal about the legendary Japanese productivity.  And most of it comes from TPM!
